  • British Cars Built for Racing

British Parts Northwest Classic Car Racing

Vintage Sports Car Racing is something that many British car enthusiasts may find of interest.  There are several classic British cars that were built specifically for racing and we wanted to highlight a few of those cars.

Austin Healey- The Austin Healey was one of the most popular British racing cars. It was raced by the Donald Healey Motor Company in Europe at Le Mans and in Sebring in the U.S . The last Big Healey to win an SCCA National Championship was the class E Production Austin-Healey 100-6 driven by Alan Barker at the Daytona ARRC in 1965. You can find parts for several Austin Healey models here at BP.

Jaguar- There were multiple models of the Jaguar that were involved in racing, including the C-Type, D-Type, E-Type, XJ13, XJ-C, XJ41 and XJ42. If you are the proud owner of an E-Type, you can get parts for your car, right here from our website!

Land Rover- There are a couple of modified Land Rovers that have competed in off-road racing, specifically the Dakar Rally and the Camel Trophy.

MG- In the MG family, the MGA, MGB, and Midget (MG Midget Racing Coupes) all had models that participated in racing. The MGA had considerable success, racing extensively in the U.S. There were MGBs that were specially tuned for racing, which achieved success including a Grand Touring category victory in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally. There were 3 Midgets that were ordered by MG racing driver, Dick Jacobs. The cars were campaigned from 1962-1964. We have parts for the MGA, MGB and the Midget, in addition to other models of the MG.

Triumph- The Triumph Spitfire and GT6 both had models that were built for racing. We proudly carry parts for both of these Triumph models, in addition to other Triumphs!

  • Timeline of the Triumph Spitfire

    1971 Triumph Spitfire MkIV

The Triumph Spitfire is a two-seater British car that was first introduced in 1962. There were five models of the Spitfire sold during the production run. Here is a timeline of the life of the Triumph Spitfire:

1962- The expensive and small Triumph Spitfire 4 (Mark I) was introduced. The Mark I was a 4-speed manual with a 1.1 L engine. There were 45,5753 of the Mark I model produced.

1964- Production on the Mark I came to an end.

1965- Production on the Triumph Spitfire Mark II began. The Mark II was very similar to the Mark I, but it had a more highly tuned engine. There were 37,409 Mark IIs produced in 2 years.

1967- Production came to an end on the Mark II and began on the Triumph Spitfire Mark III. The Mark III was quite a bit different from the Mark I and II. In addition to variations in the body style, it also boasted a larger engine (1.3L). 65,320 Mark III models were made.

1970- The Triumph Spitfire Mark IV was introduced and production ceased on the Mark III. The Mark IV brought the most comprehensive redesign to the Spitfire, with changes to the front and the rear of the car. The base price of the Mark IV was £735 ($975.12). There were 70,021 Mark IV models produced.

1974- Production came to an end on the Mark IV and began on the Triumph Spitfire 1500. The 1500 had a larger engine (1.5L) than the previous models of the Spitfire. It was also the heaviest of the Spitfire models, weighing in at 1,750 lbs.

1981- Production came to an end on the 1500, ending all production of the Triumph Spitfire.

We proudly carry over 500 parts for the Triumph Spitfire, which you can purchase right here on our website or by calling us at 503-864-2001!

Hey guys, it's Travis the BP guy. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I took my 1972 Triumph Spitfire out for a ride in Deer Creek Canyon, Southwest of Denver, CO. It was a wonderful and beautiful drive and I just wanted to share a video of it with all of our favorite customers! Enjoy!

  • Colorado English Motoring Conclave

The Colorado English Motoring Conclave gathering of British cars took place last month at Oak Park in Arvada, Colorado. The Conclave is the largest event in the Rocky Mountain region, with over 500 vehicles coming from all over to participate. We had one of our loyal customers contact us, saying that he went to this event and wanted to share his experience. Here is what he had to say:

Hey BP guys, my wife and I attended the Colorado Conclave last month and just wanted to pass along the wonderful experience that we had. The car show was HUGE and VERY well organized. We were definitely impressed by how well they had everything sectioned  off, so you knew exactly what you were going to be looking at. We also found it impressive that people came from all over to attend. There was even a hand-painted, beat up Spit that came down from Wyoming. We couldn't believe they made it! In addition to enjoying the British cars, there was also a bagpipe band that was really good. Overall, we very much enjoyed the event (this the second year in a row that we've gone) and I intend on returning next year!

    -Dwight & Bonnie, Colorado

Thanks to Dwight for telling us about his experience at the Colorado Conclave and sharing some of your photos (see below)! We are thrilled to share the love for British vehicles with other people throughout the country! If you have a story of a British car event that you've attended, please share it with us on our Facebook page!

  • Why We Love Our British Car Classics

You can certainly tell it’s springtime by the number of classic car shows popping up around town and the increased traffic of car enthusiasts taking their prized restorations out for a spin. The weather is making this a calm, warm and rather beautiful spring season throughout most of the country before the heat of summer sets in, and it’s hard to go too far on any given day without ending up ogling a classic on the road next to you.

If you are a proud owner of a British car, you already know that there is no better time than right now to get your prized possession up to the standard you want to achieve for those driving moments and car displays. At British parts Northwest, we can help you achieve your car to the restoration readiness you desire. We stock and sell new parts for British cars, Triumph, MG, Jaguar and Austin Healey, at reasonable prices with fast, courteous, prompt service to the customer.

What makes us different than the other suppliers out there? British Parts Northwest came into being as a result of the owner, Greg Sherick; interest in racing a Triumph Spitfire in SCCA sponsored races in Portland, Oregon in the late 1970's. In order to keep the expenses down, Greg found it more economical to purchase a whole car that would have parts to match the needed ones of his "F" Production 1970 Spitfire. The backyard of his family's home in Lake Oswego, Oregon became littered with several cars in various stages of disarray and Cherry, his wife, suggested strongly that he get rid of what he didn't need and the rest of the cars. Greg placed an ad in the Portland paper for "Parting out Triumph Spitfire" and was amazed at the immediate response. Thus was born British Parts which also fit nicely with Greg's service station business at the time.

From that humble beginning to a larger family business that now includes his son and daughter, the core belief of providing parts at the lowest prices possible and maintaining courteous service remains intact. We stock what we sell, eliminating the middle man, and currently are offering free shipping on all orders over $750.

Check out our website to see what items ready and available to ship out to you today! Or, contact us by phone or email so we can help your next car project become a reality!

  • Powering Up Your British Car

A top reason that continues to draw a loyal fan base to European cars is the love of a great, high performance drive. People love the maneuverability and power combined with strong, sleek designs that just aren’t found in American cars. And regardless of the style of British car you own, finding ways to get more power is a common question we get.

Before you tweak your British baby with performance upgrades, know that that adding to one area of the engine may mean changes need to be made elsewhere to ensure overall reliability in the long run.

    ZZ7F993A50.jpg

According to a recent survey made in Spitfire GT6 magazine, here are the upgrades readers have typically done to increase the power of their Spitfire:

    • 26 percent - Headers/Exhaust to allow air to move out of the engine faster.
    • 22 percent - Carburetors to allow air to move into the engine faster.
    • 17 percent - Engine Swap going to larger engines that already have more horsepower.
    • 8 percent - Hot Cam to help the valves bring in and expel more air.
    • 6 percent - High Compression Pistons to increase the size of the "bang".
    • 6 percent - Electronic Ignition/Hot Coil to help the spark (that causes the bang) happen more cleanly and larger.
    • 4 percent K&N Air Filter - allow air to move into of the engine faster.
    • 4 percent Other (Added Overdrive, Supercharger, Disconnected Intake Manifold Heating)
    • 3 percent- Tune Up to help engine perform as it was designed for.
    • 3 percent - Mill (skim) the heads to increase compression
    • 1 percent - Electric Fan reduces the load that the belt driven fan creates on the engine.

At British Parts Northwest, we stock what we sell, so you can get the parts you want sold directly from us and delivered to your door. If you have questions about your Spitfire or ANY of the classic British cars we support, contact us and we can help you with information so that you can the parts you need and performance you expect.

  • We Help You to Overcome the Parts Hurdle

ZZ13297D6D.jpgThe top reason usually cited by Americans for not getting a British car is concerns over part and service availability. People tell us about horror stories about trying unsuccessfully to get a part, as it seems more and more car mechanics are opting to go mainstream and choose to stock parts for only the most common of vehicles. We are quite proud to say that British cars are indeed not “common,” and these classic and fun-to-drive cars with their sleek, unique lines and performance is why people love them so. That’s where we come in.

At British Parts Northwest, we are a family-operated business that opened our doors specifically to provide British car lovers with the ability to get parts easily and quickly so that they can drive and enjoy their car! Our motto is that we are “Large enough to serve, small enough to care about your British car.” We are not a parts locator service. We also sell apparel and accessories and feature overstock specials and even featured products on our homepage.
